Impact of the recession on the cultural sector

During the economic downturn in 2008/​2009, we produced regular updates on how the economic downturn affected the cultural sector in the West Midlands.

We used several sources that gave an indication of:

  • How different types of cultural organisations were affected by economic conditions (visitor numbers, revenue, and so on).
  • Cultural consumer confidence.
  • Examples of how cultural organisations in the West Midlands responded to adverse economic conditions.
  • Variations in levels of employment and in the number of cultural job vacancies.
  • Variations in the price of cultural goods and services.
